In 1865, local entrepreneurs established the first telephone line in Washington Territory. The first post office was opened in Oak Harbor on October 7, 1865 by Capt. Samuel Alderhyde. In 1892, a grain elevator was built in downtown Oak Harbor by J.D.] Westcott and others. That same year saw the opening of what is now called Pioneer Hall which served as the town's first municipal hall until it burned down in 1911. In 1916, an oil refinery was built west of downtown Oak Harbor by Harry Harkness and Wm.[Wallace]. The refinery produced crude oil until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1932, organized religion began to play a significant role inOak Harbor life with the founding of First Methodist Episcopal Church which remains one of town's most prominent institutions today In 1942, local veterans formed Camp Liberty which later became known as Fort Lewis Military Base
