The first European to visit the Puget Sound area wasCaptain Discovery, commanded by Englishman Johnstone in 1792. The first permanent settler in what is now Oak Harbor was George Vancouver, who arrived on July 14, 1807. The population of Oak Harbor peaked at around 100 in 1825 and declined rapidly thereafter. In 1898, a group of entrepreneurs founded the Seattle-based All Nippon Airways (ANA) as an alternative to other carrier railways that had been developing throughout the Northwest. In 1901, ANA merged with American Airlines and became American Airlines/ANA. Oak Harbor's heyday as a fishing village ended after WWII when America developed more aeronautical capabilities and began flying commercial passenger services over the waterway. However, Oak Harbor has continued to enjoy modest economic growth through various businesses such as antique shops, seafood restaurants and real estate agents since World War II until recently when it experienced a surge in development spurred by its proximity to SeaTac Airport.
