Oak Harbor is a town in the Yakima Valley, Washington, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south bank of the Snake River and is part of the Yakima-Cascades Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Oak Harbor was Captain George Vancouver in 1792. He named it after his friend and shipmate Colonel James Cook who had explored this area two years earlier. In 1853, Augustus Thornton built a log cabin on what is now downtown Oak Harbor and started trading with Native Americans here. With increasing trade came more settlers and by 1860 there were over 20 homes in the town. In 1862, when Congress passed an act authorizing Indian land acquisition in Washington State, local residents voted to become part of the new tribal nation called The Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians Nation (later known asthe Confederated Tribes of The Yakama Nation). As part of Indian-led negotiations for reservation lands in eastern Washington state, Oak Harbor leaders met with representatives from these nations at Fort Snelling near Stonington on May 12-15, 1865. At this meeting they agreed that their town would be included within newly organized Yakima County but were not given any specific land parcels or boundaries. Although not specifically mentioned during those negotiations, Oak Harbor likely became an integral part of The Cheyenne and Arapaho Nation because its citizens had firsthand experience running country stores for their tribe's many members scattered throughout Eastern Washington state at that time. By 1868 all but one resident of Oak Harbor had moved away to join their TRI family holdings elsewhere within the new reservation territory - although a few people continued to reside there until 1921 when most eventually left due to various factors including racism towards Native Americans living on reservations) In 1869 Orville Wright visited this area while stationed aboard USS Constitution under command of Commodore John Cushing during her maiden voyage across America's Great Lakes region before becoming General Motors' first customer in North America After USS Constitution departed Puget Sound for duty off California in 1870 Navy sailors took possession of her moorings off southern dock #1 in anticipation that she would soon return home following her decommissioning tour Thereafter Sailors stored cannons & ammunition onboard & used them against Indians accompanying Chief Seattle on his exploration trip upriver from Whatcom Island through present day Tacoma
