The first people to live in what is now Oak Harbor were the Hidatsa and Puyallup Indians. They traded with the whites and their land was used for agriculture until white men came around 1851 when they started farming cotton. In 1859 two steamboats nicknamed "Oasis" brought settlers from Illinois to settle in what is now Oak Harbor; one of these boats was renamed "Oregon". In 1865 John Davenport founded the county seat of Pierce County and moved Oregon's courthouse to what is now Oak Harbor so that it could be closer to his ranching operations in that area. The town was incorporated on December 3rd, 1871 when it numbered only 8 residents. In 1898 a railroad line called Tacoma & Seattle Railway built through Oak Harbor by way of Everett and Prairie du Chien reached here from Tacoma and Seattle via Mukilteo and Chelan Counties. This line also connected with Puget Sound Railroad systems serving Olympia, Bellevue, Issaquah, Federal Way, SeaTac Airport and White Salmon before ending near present day Auburn by way of Newcastle upon Tyne As early as 1907 there had been talk of building a military airfield in or near this community which would have allowed local farmers access to aerial bombing during World War I but nothing ever came about because of financial problems at Boeing facilities across Washington state at Pullman Palace Station north of Tacoma During World War II much activity took place within this small town such as munitions plants operated by Boeing Company on North Island Build-I Road just east of town center while other companies produced tanks., planes etc., all taking place despite strict rules prohibiting military activities within civilian areas . On September 2nd 1945 USS Constitution arrived at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island outside Anchorage carrying General Electric Aircraft Corp.'s XP-118 nuclear reactor research aircraft carrier model A3N2 flown into drydock for overhaul after engines failed during takeoff test The following day radar operators aboard USS San Francisco sighted an unknown object off shore that turned out later to be an enemy bomber over Puget Sound!
