The party named their stop after Dr. George Vancouver'soak-hued ship Discovery which had been lost at sea two years earlier When they reached Lower Oak Harbor onshore, they found that it was already populated by Native Americans who had named their village "Upper" because of its location above water level on the sound's eastern shoreline In 1853, Congress appropriated $10,000 for the construction of a wharf in LowerOak harbor to allow goods to be unloaded and brought into Seattle without being carried overland through sagebrush and mountain forests which lay beyond the town limits The first store in what is now Oak Harbor opened in 1854 In 1861, citizens ofSeattle formed a town Improvement Association (TIA) to improve public services such as schools and drainage systems within their city boundaries In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed an act creating Kitsap County; Oak Harbor became its county seat On July 1st 1870, Tacoma annexed parts of Kitsap County including Oak Harbor making it one municipality By 1890, there were only 4 businesses in town with 50 residents total

They named their new community after a small creek that flowed through the town site. In 1825, Oak Harbor became an incorporated village under the name of Kootenai Falls. In 1907, it was renamed for Commodore John Dennison Peary, who had been instrumental in developing sound policy for Alaska during the Alaskan Gold Rush years (1885-1896). In 1909, when Kootenai Falls was annexed by Wenatchee Valley as part of a deal between these two towns to keep them separate from each other while they grew larger, most residents decided to change their names to match those of their respective cities or villages. Many residents still keep their original hometown names today - such as Cherry Valley and Salmon Bay - while others have adopted more recent nicknames or locales based on their personal interests or favorite activities within their communities: Broadwayerville (the nickname given to Oak Harbor when it rhymes with "broadway"), Cannery Row (named after a fall crop that locals used to export), and Willow Creek (the name given to a large creek that flows through downtown). The current Main Street address may be traced back only to 1962 when City Manager Don Cramer purchased land east of US Highway 101 which he then turned into what is now Main Street - among other features including an alley leading up from his office building directly into downtown). Today's economy depends heavily upon tourism and agriculture; both are impacted by global events like hurricanes and earthquakes which can cause landslides alongributaries. Once heavy industry left Oak Harbor in the late 1800s; manufacturing has gradually returned but there are few job openings because many businesses closed down during prohibition and World War II because of scarce wartime aluminum supplies.
Oak Harbor began as a small fishing village in the early 1800s. by 1876, the town had been established as a railway junction on the Puget Sound Railroad. The town's growth continued until it became an incorporated city in 1911. In 1932, Oak Harbor was merged into Seattle and remains its sister city today.
