Newcastle is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2000 census. Newcastle is northwest of Seattle and southeast of Bellevue. The town is named after William Treadwell Newcastle, who platted the town in 1851. The first post office in Newcastle opened on July 10, 1853. Newcastle was founded by men from Yorktown Heights on March 11, 1851 as a Townsite Agreement between Albany Company (USA) and William Treadwell Newcastle. On April 9, 1852 the townsite changed hands when John Armstrong took over from William Treadwell Newcastle as Trustee for the new settlement of Newcastle Landing which lay to the south on Puget Sound. The first store opened in what is now downtown Newcastle on December 8th, 1852 by Wm H Alexander and his son-in-law Jno A Armstrong with help from their friend James Soochie. At that time there were only two homes in town: one owned by Archibald McKay and another by George Stephenson who built a sawmill and grist mill hereabouts soon after arriving in town to take advantage of what he saw as an opportunity to establish himself farming land near Elliott Bay where he had earlier located his mills at Mukilteo and Gig Harbor. He also began operations of a ferry service between Elliott Bay and Bothell with ferries running every 30 minutes during late summer months when the water was still too hot for boats to navigate upstream or downriver; today’s Elliott Bay Ferry Terminal served then just across Puget Sound from present day downtown Newcastle The early days were difficult but experiences like these gave impetus for future development including churches (First Presbyterian Chapel being completed in 1865), schools (grades 1 through 12 established within year following schoolhouse conversion into Baptist church), businesses (a grocery store opening up around this time) as well as possible annexation by other communities nearby such as Everett or even more distant Everett . In 1907/1908 construction started on a new courthouse which would serve growth throughout the community including annexing neighbouring communities such as Bothell ; Unfortunately due to budget cuts later that decade it did not come online until 1915 which further limited growth In 1924 construction began on what would become known locally as “the brick building” – originally it functioned only as an addendum to Second Avenue School; however due its importance within local history it has been renamed many times over its lifespan including “The Old Courthouse” (1964-1975), “Nebraska Avenue” (!), finally becoming simply “Newcastle Courthouse” upon its reopening following somewhat protracted restoration project beginning in 2002 Today there are several businesses active within the community offering services such restaurant/cafeteria services along with real estate brokerage , homebuyers & sellers agent etc., all while maintaining central square presence complete with stained glass windows unique to each business
Newcastle was founded in 1790 by Captain John Johnston, a Scottish-born fur trader. The town became a district of Seattle in 1851 and was renamed Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1892 after the city of Newcastle, England. The town is now part of the Seattle metropolitan area.
