Newcastle, Washington is a town in Lewis County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Spokane–Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. Newcastle is located on the east bank of the Snake River and consists of a small downtown area and several smaller villages along its banks. The community's name comes from nearby Newcastle Creek. The first European to visit what is now Newcastle was Captain George Vancouver who charted the route for future fur traders in 1792. On July 13, 1811 Dutch explorer Cornelius Bidstrup discovered gold near present-day Newcastle when he explored southeast Washington during his trip down the Columbia River. This discovery set off a gold rush that followed throughout much of Lewis County and north central Spokane Valley by 1821. In 1824 American prospector James Kapp organized a wagon train which included many local men to explore northwest Russia for precious metals including diamonds and silver. After reaching Yakutat on April 15 they continued their journey upriver to Nome on May 3 but were met with strong resistance from Native Americans who claimed alluvial land around their traditional hunting ground particularly around present-day Newcastle creek where they found rich deposits of silver and other minerals as well as ancient artifacts dating back to before Christopher Columbus' exploration of America in 1492 A.D.. The Englishmen went into hiding until eventually leaving behind $1 million worth of treasure while some 300 people died trying to get it back overland through hostile territory before finally turning it over to the U.S government in 1865 at Fort Yukon treaty signing with representatives from Great Britain (the Russians had already taken control of most eastern Alaska). During World War II Newfoundlanders served alongside their native sons overseas including those who fought in Europe and Asia; many natives also became citizens after returning home during that conflict although many continue to maintain connections with their homeland even today through social clubs, cultural events, business ventures etc., some notable examples being Garry McCarthy (Norman), Donny Ferguson (Laramie), Randy Bowen (Spokane), Ed McGowan (Atchison) & Russ Weyerhaeuser (Newcastle). In recent years there has been revival activity among descendantsof those original settlers such as founding members of the New England Patriots football team Curt Schiano & his father Gus Schiano Sr., current NBA player Derrick Rose & former NFL linebacker Chad Simpson both natives born& raised hereabouts; prominent local historian emeritus Drayton Headrick also hails from Newcastle although he spent mosthis professional life outside Lewis County
