Newcastle is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Newcastle and the only incorporated city in Washington County. The history of Newcastle goes back to 1853 when settlers arrived from Maine. A post office was established in 1855, and by 1865 it had grown to include a store and six homes. In 1872, the first public school opened in Newcastle. The first churches were built in Newcastle during this time, as well as a Masonic Lodge. In 1898, an electric streetcar system was installed through town; this enabled people to travel easily between Newcastle and other nearby towns. In 1912, the first shopping center opened in Newcastle; this allowed people to purchase goods such as groceries and clothing at one location while also providing an entertainment complex including a movie theater and several bowling alleys. In 1916-1917, construction began on what would become known as "The Wall" - an 8-mile long concrete wall that served as part of the Umpqua River flood control project. The work lasted for two years and resulted in the creation of over $10 million worth of jobs within the town limits alone! After completion of the wall, businesses throughout town relocated out into more central areas where there were more opportunities for growth. In 1951 Oceanography professor J B Sibley came to teach at Newcastle Community College responsible for developing water resources research programs across all states within North America! This gave new life to ideas about developing a downtown shopping district around CCNU campus which would eventually become "The Landing". A referendum was held in 1957 asking if residents wanted their city status changed from Rural Municipality (RM) to City? Over 60% voted Yes! On July 1st 1959 Mayor Clyde Haddock proposed that Cityhood be granted to Newcastle by then Governor Leslie Johnston who signed it into law! As part of its designation as City/Township - NewCASTLE became one of only two cities/townships in Oregon with both local government functions (police & fire) AND business functions (a library)! Today's economy is based largely on tourism with properties like The Landing continuing to contribute significantly towards its GDP!

Newcastle is a small town in Walla Walla County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yakima metropolitan area. Newcastle is named after General David E. Lee's headquarters during the American Civil War. The first permanent settler in Newcastle was George Chambers, who arrived in 1866. He and his family built a log cabin on the site of what is now called Chambers Creek Road. In 1870, John Aikens built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. By 1880, there were four settlements in this area: Chambers Creek Road (now Chambers Creek Lane), North Main Street (now Main Street Northeast), and South Main Street (now Southwestern Avenue). The first school in Newcastle was opened in 1871 by Mrs. Cushman and Drs. Wiley and Macdonald with ten students from Caldwell and Poulsbo villages as pupils; it operated for one year before being closed due to low enrollment. In 1872, Mr. Witherspoon founded the first white grocery store in Newcastle when he obtained land from Chancellor Peabody for $6000 cash reward as part of an agreement to help settle Puget Sound claims against Duncan & Company; this store continued to be open until 1912 when it was replaced by the present day shopping center which occupies most of East Second Avenue NE Between 1875-1887 there were three churches established within Newcastle: First Presbyterian Church (later renamed Anderson Methodist Episcopal church), Second Presbyterian Church (), Third Presbyterian Church (). Scottish Rite Cathedral also opened its doors here between 1893-1901 (). During World War I, many citizens volunteered their time or services to serve in various ways; such as working at local munitions plants or helping build tanks or other military equipment (); however, only two individuals - J H McKay Sr., Mayor () - received government honors for their contributions during that war: McKay was presented with an honorary award from President Roosevelt on December 2nd 1944 () . In 1916 following passage of The National Defense Authorization Act (), King County established the Department of Public Works () with responsibility for improving highways throughout King County.; howeverenergetic efforts towards improvement have been slow to take hold due largely to lack of funds ().Between 1924-1927 School District No.-4 made land purchases totaling nearly 20 acres along Stevens Creek east of present day Main Street/Eastside Drive NW cornering what are now Park Way NE and Northumberland Avenue NW ; these purchases allowed for construction of both schools – current High School building #2()was dedicated September 24th 1927(). On October 10th 1928 new School District No.-3 joined forces with school district No.-4 resulting in merger into one entity known today as “Newcastle Community Schools”) In 1935 following passage of The New Deal (), instigated by Franklin D Roosevelt (), work began on developing land off Highway 99E where present day Northumberland Ave NE meets Highway 99W(); this project eventually resulted in the creation of Interstate 90S across much of Walla Walla County including parts of Newcastle (); moreover, many new businesses were brought into operation thanks to plentiful cheap labor available through federal stimulus programs such as Agricultural Adjustment Administration ()); these programs continue even unto this day
