In 1851, Newcastle's population reached 10,000 and it began to grow rapidly as a bedroom community for Seattle. By 1907, the city had grown to over 100,000 people and was home to both the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and the Seattle Municipal Court. During World War II, Newcastle was an important manufacturing center with production of munitions and military equipment making it one of Washington's largest cities. After the war, however, Newcastle lost its status as a major metropolitan area and declined in popularity until recent years when it has seen slight increases in population and development. Newcastle is located at 37°48'N 106°24'W / 37.9578 N 106.4609 W / -106.4609 W (36 mi) northeast of Seattle on Highway 99A between Everett and Bothell; its elevation is 463 ft (151 m). The town is adjacent to Bothell on the left bank of Lakeview Creek east of Interstate 5; its right bank forms part of what used to be known as Dutch Flat before being annexed by Newcastle in 1916; its total area is 11 square miles (27 km²). The original inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Newcastle; they also built small villages along streams that flow through or near the town limits. The first European settler in what would become Newcastle was Captain James Cook who sailed from England in 1785 bound for China before returning in HMS Erebus with news that Japan had discovered new landmass offthe coast of Asia Minor! Cook named this new land New South Wales after King George III gave him permission to do so! A few weeks later he arrived at Juan de Fuca Strait where he anchored beneath Mt Baker which still stands today! From here he led his men northwestward along Puget Sound until they sighted land about 250 miles due north called Vancouver Island! Cook named this new land North America after King George III… although there are several iterations as to why! From here he sailed northwestward again but ran into trouble because his wind flags failed him!! He turned around back towards Europe but running into another storm got caught up with weather front moving southwards across North America!!!! At some point during all this chaos someone found some pieces of glass which leads us believe that somebody may have been playing games with them – hahaha!!! Anyway…… we get where we are today because Captain James Cook discovered our current location while sailing…. not playing games!!! Although many places were given names based off theseventures such as Cape Horn after long journey Magellan made trying find East Indies Wind ships going without proper charts…..ughhhh so sorry!!!!! Anyway………… NEWCASTLE!!!!! Thank you King George III!!!!!!!!
