Mukilteo is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area and is adjacent to Lynnwood and Bothell. The harbor and fishing village of Mukilteo were founded by the Dutch in 1655 as a trading post on Puget Sound. In 1854, the town was incorporated as a city under the name of Tacoma. It lost its charter status in 1907 and became an unincorporated community again until it was annexed by Mukilteo in 1932. In 1978, Mukilteo became one of five communities within the Evergreen State Park system. Mukilteo has a rich history dating back to when the Dutch first landed here in 1655 on Puget Sound with their ships called "Hondenvloot". They named their new settlement "Mukiltiek", which means "harboring place" or "port". The first permanent settler was Pieter de Valk who arrived in 1792 from Utrecht, Netherlands with his family and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. After years of growth, De Valk's cabin came to be known as Fort De Valk after he donated land for it on which Mukilteo Harbor now stands. The first school for children in MukilteleO was established in 1857 by Mrs . Anna Catharine Newbold (née Low) with funding from her husband John Newbold Sr., one of several pioneers who fought against Vancouver's annexation into Canada during the Gold Rush period (1858-60). A second school opened two years later at other location near where present day Third Avenue intersects First Avenue; this school burned down shortly thereafter due to lack of insurance coverage! At that time only white citizens could vote so annexation did not mean any change for black residents living within our city limits On July 15th 1937 Mayor Alvin Olson announced via proclamation that all homes within 500 feet of City Hall had been requisitioned for use as fire stations during World War II The last private homes were requisitioned just before war ended on September 2nd 1945 & sold off through various channels Thereafter all home ownership stopped & properties reverted back to municipality control On January 14th 1946 City Council adopted An Ordinance providing for property acquisition & condemnation activities necessary for maintenance & improvement purposes including but not limited to streetlighting along First Ave from White Street southward thru Center Street then eastward thru Key Streets thence northward thru Second Avenue unto Trojan Road thence westward thru Fourth Avenue
