Mukilteo, Washington is a town located in Kitsap County, Washington. The population was 7,441 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Kitsap County by population and has been called "The Panhandle of Puget Sound". Mukilteo lies on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma. Mukilteo was founded by Scotsmen in 1853 as a small trading post on the edge of what is now Mukilteo Lake. In 1857, it became the capital of Kitsap County when King George III moved from Olympia to become its first governor. The name Mukilteo comes from the Muckleshoot word "muku-lote" which means place where salmon spawn. The original millrace that ran through Mukilteo became navigable after being constructed by Captain Johnstone Stewart in 1854 as part of his canal project for shipping traffic along Puget Sound. A sawmill was also built here in 1865; it closed down within a few years because of low demand for wood products around Puget Sound. In 1915, about 100 people lived and worked at an agricultural farmstead that had been established near present-day Kulshan Avenue and Sixth Street NW; this farmstead later became home to the University of Washington (UW) Arboretum before being sold to Microsoft in 2001. On July 1, 2002, Microsoft changed its name to Microsoft Windows 2000 Corp., thus ending 9 years of UW ownership and beginning anew with a new campus location across Elliott Bay from downtown Seattle on Capitol Hill NW adjacent to Safeco Field SE (then known as Mariners Stadium). As one of only two areas within Microsoft's corporate boundaries without any buildings or land owned outright by either company (the other area being Redmond), much development took place around campus over these 9 years: construction began on new buildings such as McCaw Hall/Anderson Science Center (2006), One Main Street NE (2007), Gates Building/Microsoft Research Northwest (2008), Xbox 360 HQ Campus Site I & II(2009) and Mooreland Place/Research Triangle Park South Campus Site(2010). Other notable developments include several large open spaces surrounding campus such as North Oval Drive NE & East Oval Drive NE - home to research centers such as Surface Computing Technologies Pvt Ltd., Artificial Intelligence Lab Northwest Research Consortium ((AILRC)), bioscience labs including Immunology Laboratory Northwest Research Consortium((ILNRC)) and Genetics Laboratories Northwest Research Consortium((GLNRC)), student housing comprising three blocks bounded by First Avenue NE & Union Street NE/Pierce Road SW cornering First Avenue SE; Pioneer Square - home to dining options like Applebee's restaurant[1], Starbucks Coffee,[2] Shake Shack[3], Pavilion Dining Commons[4] among others; and a brand new $325 million headquarters complex dubbed "Homesense" which opened in late 2013 just south of campus across Elliott Bay from Safeco Field SE [then known as Mariners Stadium]. This complex includesohnce space for more than 1,000 employees and 50 single-story residences.[5][6][7] With Handsense completion came significant economic development throughout much of Downtown Seattle with restaurants catering to employees going upmarket while some smaller businesses were forced out due to competition from larger employers within Microsoft's Corporate boundaries. This led eventually to displacement or closure many small businesses within Downtown Seattle overall making it difficult for longtime residents There have also been concerns raised about possible job loss or displacement resulting from increased suburbanization or light industry growth nearcampus leading some residents thereto protest against these types of developments[8][9]. Although these protests have ebbed and flowed over time they continue nonetheless given their impact on daily life outsideof school hours
