Mukilteo is a town located in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. Mukilteo is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Everett to the south and east, Redmond to the north and west, and Bothell to the northwest. Mukilteo was first settled in 1853 as an agricultural village on Puget Sound. The town site was chosen for its location near two canals that connected Puget Sound with Lake Union. In 1868, Mukilteo became an incorporated municipality and began Tokei Creek Flood Control Project which used earthmoving equipment to improve water flow through Tokei Creek into Lake Union. In 1958, Mukilteo annexes Redmond to become one of its constituent townships; this action allowed Redmond's annexation by Seattle without a vote by residents in Mukilteo or elsewhere in Thurston County. In 1984, Robert Iverson became Mayor of Mukilteo after being elected as a Democrat from Everett on November 4th; he would serve until his death in office on January 6th of that year. On October 25th of that year (the same day as statewide US Presidential election), Ed Murray won via majority vote over Dino Rossi for Mayor of Seattle; Murray would serve out his term until becoming speaker of the House following the resignation of Sam Johnson in 2011. The town has experienced growth throughout its history - it has seen significant development due to both its proximity to downtownSeattle and its status within Thurston County as an incorporated municipality with full voting rights—a characteristic not common among unincorporated areas within Thurston County during this time frame (1958-2011).
