Mukilteo is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Mukilteo is home to the University of Washington and two high school districts: Mukilteo-Smyth and Bothell-Bellevue. Mukilteo was founded by John Fitzpatrick in 1882 as a small community on Puget Sound just north of Olympia. The first school in town was built on this square in 1903; it became an elementary school until 1975 when it became an all-day public school. In 1927, Congressman Everett Dirksen announced his intention to move Congress from Capitol Hill to Seattle because he believed that such an action would improve communication within the state and between different parts of Washington (including Mukilteo). The first permanent settler in Mukilteo was Captain George Vancouver on July 14, 1810. Mukilteo’s population continued to grow through World War II as war production moved into the town along with other wartime industries such as aircraft building and shipbuilding which produced thousands of jobs across Thurston County while also helping contribute $2 million dollars to local coffers during the war period alone.
