The population continued to grow until the early 1970s when white flight began tooming in Mukilteo's population as people moved out of the area for economic reasons. In 1976, Mukilteo was renamed Tacoma after its then- Mayor James T. Hennepin (D). After years of struggles including efforts by local politicians to keep the name Mukilteo while lobbying by Boeing Corporation to rename its facilities in Tacoma after former mayors Robert Moses and Norm Coleman (R), both names were dropped in 1991 following approval from then-President George H.W. Bush as part of a response to growing Native American opposition to any change within Indian Country that would benefit non-native tribesmen alone at their expense.
