Mukilteo, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Mukilteo is located on the Puget Sound area of the West Side of Seattle. It is bordered to the east by Seattle and to the west by White River Junction. Mukilteo's first settler was Alexander McDougall in 1852. The town was founded as a farmstead on what is now East 132nd Street and North Main Street. In 1878, James Hutton donated land for a school in Mukilteo. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1886. From its incorporation until 1959, Mukilteo had a mayor-council form of government with three members serving terms of four years each; however, this system changed to an elected mayor and seven councilmembers when it became an unincorporated community under state law effective January 1st 1959. The original name for Mukilteo was "Pioneer Settlement". Pioneer Settlement moved from their original location near Yelm after Indian Removal Dutchman Jan Hendrik Douwester discovered rich deposits of coal there in 1792 while exploring his way through present day King County looking for new land to settle. douwster named his discovery Hellsinki (later shortened to simply Hell). In 1907, local real estate developer John Anderson purchased 640 acres adjacent to Hellsinki from Douwester and renamed it Mukilteo after himself - one of Anderson's many aliases during his career as a developer in King County In 1922-1923, then Town Supervisor Harry Hagerty developed land northeast of downtown which he named "Hagstrom Heights". After only two years due to low enrollment and high costs associated with building roads on such short notice (due also to World War II shortages), he sold most of Hagstrom Heights back to Douwester for $1 million . Hagstrom Heights would continue play host to several small businesses which operated out of trailers until they were replaced by larger buildings starting around 1965 when Highway 99 approached from the south . Today much of Hagstrom Heights still stands undeveloped although some development has taken place including apartment complexes on former agricultural land beyond Hagstrom Heights Road . In 1957-1959 Mayor Everett Dirksen repealed attempts by Councilmember Clyde Laddington (D) & Councilmember Thurston Moorehead (R) t o pass an ordinance granting cityhood To Mukilo & White River Junction respectively thru resolution #1027 resulting in heated debate between these two City Councilmembers over who should lead upTown Hall that year while residents continued flooding into downtown streets following Nathan Eaves' Chevy truck running afoul Of Traffic Laws displaying lawn ornaments while driving within Town limits
