Mukilteo formed from an amalgamation of two villages: North Bend and South Bend. The towns were named after British military general Sir John Moore, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Oregon Territory. Mukilteo is located on Puget Sound about east of Seattle and north of Tacoma. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard lies partially within Mukilteo limits to the south and west while other portions are annexed by South Bend to form Mukilteo village in 1879 or 1880 according to local records but no record exists verifying that annexation occurred As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 1,569 people residing in MukilteoTownship. Of these, 514 (86%) lived in buildings over one story and 94 (12%) lived in buildings less than one story high; all others lived in vehicles or on private property outside of town limits (). Mukilteo is a small town located in King County, Washington. The population of Mukilteo was 5,690 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated village in King County. The name "Mukilteo" means "place where the salmon run." The first permanent settler in what is now Mukilteo was Nicholas Ayer in 1851. Growth steadily occurred until 1888 when there were only six residents living in the community. In that year, a survey of the area revealed an ideal location for a post office and mail service as it lay on high ground between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. The first postmaster was James Wickenheiser who served from 1888 to 1893. In 1898, Mukilteo became part of Seattle and had its own Post Office Department with David Fenton as Postmaster-General. However, by 1907 there were only five residents living in Mukilteo; two of whom were transient workers hired by local farmers to farm their land during summer months when no mail service was available from Seattle or Tacoma. In 1912 Paul Crippen organized a group of citizens to begin developing streetlights and sewers within town limits which they continued to do until 1948 when all services were transferred to central Yakima City through legislation passed by the state legislature (see also Yakima Valley Electric Cooperative). A fire destroyed most buildings on Main Street near Depot Square on December 1st 1906 while Christmas shoppers shopped inside the store; causing heavy damage not seen since pioneer days when goods such as flour, pork lard, lumber, eggs and milk were brought into town via stagecoachloads unloaded at Portage Bayou below Main Street Ferry Landing
