Mukilteo is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 15,439 at the 2010 census. The Mukilteo Historic District includes five blocks of downtown and is home to the only remaining courthouse in King County. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mukilteo were fur traders frometchy who landed on Puget Sound in 1792 and named it "Nisqually" after their leader Nisqually Island near Seattle. A German-born trader, Hendrik Vander Waals, later settled around 1814 and named the area "Mukilteo". In 1851, Lewis and Clark visited Mukilteo while exploring the Columbia River region for the US government. When they reached Mukilteo Peak they described it as follows: "We have passed through several towns and villages on our route; but we have never seen anything more extensive or beautiful than this elevated ground we are now descending; above us seems to be an extended plain of level woods; below us begins a range of hills so high that their summits appear like mountains." In 1861 Swedish immigrant John Sverdrup founded Sverdrup Renten which grew into one of Seattle's most successful agricultural businesses with fields extending out 16 miles along Lake Washington shoreline. In 1916 Sverdrup donated his land (now part of Pioneer Square) toSeattle's city government for use as a public park and also built three contributing buildings including the first municipally funded library in Seattle. One such building still stands - incarnation #2 of today's City Hall Annex Building located at 5th Avenue Northeast & South Street Northwest served as Municipal Court until 1974 when it became part of City Hall before being demolished in 2003 due to pollution concerns brought about by then-new CenturyLink Field construction nearby which continues to impact visibility since then). Mukilteo is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. Mukilteo is located on Puget Sound and is bordered by Cheney to the south, Mount Rainier National Park to the east, and Seattle to the north. The first Europeans to visit Mukilteo were Capt. James Cook and his crew of HMS Endeavour in 1792-93 when they sailed around Cape Horn. Cook named it "Mukilteo" after the Hawaiian island of Maui (from Māui ‘aina or "land of plenty"). In 1847, Acting territorial governor John Cranch issued land grants for seven miles inland from Mukilteo Creek which included present day downtown Mukilteo. In 1851–52 Governor David Stevens recommended that a post office be established at Mukilteo with Wm Hays as its first postmaster. A vote was taken on November 14, 1853 and Postmaster Hays received a postal order for 9 hundred dollars from Territorial Gov’t Treasurer George Simpson ordering him to start receiving mail thereon. On December 1st an act authorizing Congress “to provide for organizing and conducting the Indian trade on Puget Sound” was approved by both houses of Congress without report from President James K Polk who had just been inaugurated into office two days earlier! The town site was surveyed by Captain Robert Saunter and sold in 1865 to Andrew J Fife who platted it into blocks organized into streets according to British colonial street grids system - much like Seattle today! In 1876 local residents built what became known as Pioneer Hall which still stands today as one of downtown's most popular attractions for cultural events such as music concerts and art exhibitions featuring Northwest artists throughout the years! The city hall building served as home court during much of its early history before being replaced in 1914 by the current facility which contains a variety of commerical spaces including an opportunity shop/bank/grocery store/internet cafe combo! The telephone company operated several businesses adjacent to Pioneer Hall until they discontinued service in 1967 when phone switching technology progressed beyond leased lines allowing direct connection between remote cities thereby ending telco dominance over rural areas! From 1967-1981 all phone service within town limits occurred through Bellsouth providing excellent customer service via walkie talkies prioritizing call waiting over voice only service! Today you can find many original features dating back to Pioneer Hall such as copper wiring running throughout entire building from basement level up making it extremely well preserved against fire damage - something not often found among older buildings in this area!! In 1977 numerous homes along First Ave NW were destroyed in a large fire starting near First Ave NE & turning quickly northeast spreading rapidly through neighborhoods until finally extinguishing about 3 miles away!!! This event remains either Newspaper Macabre Or One Of Most Shocking Acts Of Urban Destruction Ever Occurring Within An American City
