After the war, Mukilteo experienced rapid growth as an auto manufacturing center thanks to Federal Auto Workers Local 775's (FALW) efforts to build plants in Mukilteo from 1946 through 1957. The community rapidly regained its post-war stature during the late 1960s through 1970s when households began buying cars rather than renting them; this led to the construction of two large shopping malls – Northport Plaza and Southport Plaza – which anchored downtown streetscape. The city's fortunes changed dramatically after January 1, 1978 when Ronald Reagan became president of the United States following American Revolution Day celebrations that took place throughout much of America including King George III's coronation in London that day (see also "US History: On January 1st"). With high-profile visits from then-presidential candidates Richard Nixon (shown below), Gerald Ford (shown below), Jimmy Carter (shown below), and Nelson Mandela (seen below) over the course of several weeks during late summer 1977–early fall 1977,[1] Reagan announced plans for what became known as "Reaganomics." One goal of Reaganomics was To reduce government spending by creating jobs within government agencies while increasing private industry's share in national production.[2] As part of these efforts[3], local officials initiated development projects such as Mukilteo Landing Drive which connected downtown with nearby suburbs; Northport Plaza; Southport Plaza; Lakeside Place;[4] orchards; a reservoir[5]; power plant[6]; housing developments such as Makin Park[7]; Golden Gardens Estates[8]——all designed around specific transportation needs or geographic amenities needed by those living near Governmental facilities like Naval Base(s).[9][10][11][12] These initiatives resulted in new residential areas being built next door to Navy yards where once only farmland now stands,[13][14][15][16] while other redevelopment projects such as Northshore Village have since been abandoned altogether despite promisesmade by local officials about their revival.[17]) Today there are more than 4500 dwelling units within walking distance of any Governmental facility or major street artery,[18][19][/20][/21][/22][/23],[24]= While today Mukilteo does not experience significant economic decline typical among communities experiencing rapid growth during post-war years,[25], some aspects do differ markedly from how things were prior thereto: For example, there are now more children playing outdoors than insideidated homes due largely to lively public activities like swimming pools/waterfalls available year round outside even during cold winter months,[26],[27],[28]' playgrounds' abound along beach front walkways adjacent both municipally owned sand dunes oriented towards water activity'Lakeside Place,' homebuilder/developer preferences clearly visible all along recent commercial waterfront neighborhoods adjacent I-5 just southwest corner stateline boundary=' unlike 50 years ago where nearly everyone lived indoors unless they had family who could help out', nightlife choices have become increasingly convoluted thru bars closeby popular with young professionals nearby arterial routes,' employment opportunities available doorstep truck stop restaurants--recently busy with fast food chains recently moving away from docks landing lots facing northward toward Interstate 5
