Mukilteo took its name from the Alaskan village of Kivalina. Mukilteo began as an agricultural community on Puget Sound in 1855. In 1911, it became a city and was incorporated as such on January 15, 1912. The city's growth led to the development of many businesses and residences in addition to new schools and parks. Today, Mukilteo remains an agricultural center with a focus on fruits and vegetables production; however, its economy has diversified over time to include manufacturing, retail trade, real estate services and technology companies. The naturally sheltered harbor at Mukilteo Bay offers excellent docking opportunities for ships that are visiting or transiting Puget Sound; additionally, the town lies just south of Interstate 5 which makes it easy to get around without having to drive outside of town or take public transportation

Mukilteo, Washington is a town on Puget Sound in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 8,878 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The name Mukilteo means "milky way" in the Yakut language and refers to the clear water around the town that makes it a popular place for swimming and fishing. Mukilteo was founded by Englishmen in 1851 as an agricultural settlement on what is now Everett Boulevard. It became a city in 1907 when it merged with neighboring Puyallup to form Seattle. The townsite was named for General James A. McMillan, who had been sent to Chinook Lake to survey land for King George IV's new colony of Vancouver Island in 1859-60. The first European settler in Mukilteo was Captain John Lathrop, who arrived from Portsmouth, England on December 1, 1851 with his family and three oxen/horses. He began farming around what is now downtown Mukilteo and built a log cabin near present day Everett Boulevard while waiting for better weather conditions to transport his goods inland overland from Tacoma or even Astoria (then known as Suquamish). In January 1852 he married Mary Hethcart and they moved into their current home on 5th Avenue SW where they would live until her death in 1865; John would continue living there until his death some years later at age 89 years old during an illness Outbreak at Harborview Hospital which caused him great suffering due to arthritis caused by days spent walking barefoot through snow drifts weekly! Upon Mary's death Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Sibley took them up on their offer to move into their house vacated by Mrs Hethcart after she died suddenly just prior to their moving-in date! Mrs Hethcart left behind four children: Anna (1853-1946), Samuel Sibley (1855-1943), Harry Emerson Woolridge (1857-1920) and Florence Margarita Sibley Woolridge (baptized October 9th 1861 - died January 26th 1951). After one year of occupancy Lt Col Samuel Sibley sold both houses adjoining 5th Ave SW for $4 per acre making Mukilteo an all white community! This development pattern continued with other families such as Major John Cramer who bought 4 acres east of downtown soon after coming ashore in May 1854 followed by Salmon Chase who purchased 7 acres west side early 1860’s also becoming an early civic leader & philanthropist! Many more settlers would follow including Dr Hugh Broughton who acquired 10 acres just east of downtown along 2nd Ave SE before selling many tracts totaling over 120 acres throughout much of pioneer era including portions currently located within today's University Village neighborhood adjacent Interstate 90qqqqw
The first permanent European settlement on the shores of Puget Sound was established by Captain George Vancouver in 1792. The area now known as Mukilteo was part of this early fur trade outpost. In 1851, the city of Tacoma was founded and Mukilteo became its capital. In 1872, Tacoma merged with Seattle to form one large metropolitan area. After nearly a century of growth, Mukilteo officially disappeared from the map in 1965 when it was annexed by Bellevue, Washington.
