In 1828, Vancouver sold Mukilteo to Purdy and company for $10 per acre (0.4 km²). They raised wheat and potatoes here until 1830 when they built a sawmill and began manufacturing lumber. They also constructed a gristmill in 1838. In 1865, Purdy sold the property to Jepson and Company for $2 per acre (0.08 km²). Jepson operated a grist mill here until 1895 when it became part of the National Steel Company which merged with Bethlehem Steel in 1998. The mills closed in 2006 but are now open as research and development centers of Washington State University's School of Forest Resources and Conservation
