Mukilteo was founded in 1892 as a logging and agricultural community on the eastern edge of what is now King County. In 1928, it became an enclave for Japanese Americans living in the Seattle suburb of Shoreline. In 1964, Mukilteo became an independent city and retains its strong dependence on agriculture and logging; today its economy is largely based on services such as education and health care. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mukilteo were trading people from Siberia in 1892. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s with timber and agricultural products being exported to Asia and North America. By 1930, most of what remains of downtown Mukilteo had been built including the first school (1896), post office (1928), jail (1930), church (1932), library (1936), restaurant (1945) and store(1950). During World War II many Japanese American citizens who lived in Shoreline were interned at convicted camps near Renton until 1945 when they were relocated to Mukilteo under Operation Crossroads which aimed to provide food for troops fighting abroad while also removing any incriminating evidence about their wartime activities. After Japan's surrender, much of this material was destroyed or hidden by government officials concerned about possible civil unrest if it were made public knowledge that so many individuals associated with Japan had avoided military service because they might have incriminated themselves politically or culturally. It wasn't until 1965 that Mukilteo officially became an incorporated city with its own police department after a vote by the City Councilmembers Thereafter growth continued primarily through annexation of neighboring communities: White Center in 1978, Southcenter in 1984, Ballard 1990, Andover 1999 and currently Capitol Hill Neighborhoods 1987-present

It is the most populous incorporated municipality in King County and home to the Mukilteo Naval Air Station. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1857 and founded a log cabin on the shores of Lake Washington. By 1865, they had built a more recent cabin on land that now includes Mukilteo Harbor. In 1876, they erected a small schoolhouse on what is now Northlake Drive just east of present-day Fourth Street. A year later, they donated land for a larger school house and church on First Street south of Interstate 5.. In 1907, after years of debate and design changes by various groups within the community over plans for an airport and water tower/naval air station (later renamed as Mukilteo Naval Air Station), voters approved $2 million from local millionaire Harry Haldeman to fund both projects. The first hangar was completed in 1915; construction of the main campus began that same year. By 1922, all facilities were ready for use: an airplane dealership, sports field with baseball diamonds and soccer fields; two torpedo planes; two large warehouses; two residences; one hospital; one store; three churches (St John's Episcopal Church (1892), First Baptist Church (1911), Holy Cross Catholic Parish (1922)), four schools: elementary School (grades K-5), middle School (6-8), high School (9-12) - including one which served only military students until 1954 when it became a public school - plus six acres surrounding the naval air station which formed part of . With World War II raging across Europe and Japan being bombed mercilessly by U.SAAF forces over Northern Asia, many people left their homes for war zones such as Europe or Australia but not for rural Washington State where there were few opportunities during peacetime to make money through agriculture or ranching so soldiers could become farmers instead In 1944, when American troops landed in Iwo Jima during World War II as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear to liberate Okinawa from Japanese occupation following Pearl Harbor Attack—the largest amphibious assault ever mounted by any country—the town went into lockdown mode due to fear that enemy aircraft might be based at nearby Misawa Air Base which overlooked Mukilteo NAS & its harbor thus leading to some confusion about what was happening ashore while residents took cover inside their homes or businesses fearing radiation poisoning .. After almost 10 years without fighter jets flying over our airspace we finally got our first F-16 Fighting Falcon launch from Vandenberg AFB 50 miles away today! This event marks another major milestone in our history! Postwar growth gave way to increased roadway congestion & sprawl beginning around 1970 when development started along 3rd Ave SW followed by new housing developments north & west of town center becoming increasingly difficult/impossible for locals to commute into town because services like grocery stores were moved out further into residential areas making it even harder for people who depended on those services being open late at night or during weekends .. Finally starting around 2000 things changed when Mary Buono opened her successful business called “Mukilteo” selling groceries out front before she started serving dinner inside her home nightly .. This allowed us all finally to have easy access outside during good weather without havingto leave our houses .. Today there are still some challenges faced everyday such as traffic congestion downtown but overall things are improving every day thanks primarily to your support!

During World War II, Mukilteo played a significant role in naval activity off the coast of Japan because its ships were used forU-boat patrols. In 1974, Mukilteo was renamed after Mount Rainier National Park Superintendent John A. Walsh Jr., who had served as Mayor from 1966 to 1974.
