Mukilteo, Washington is a town located in King County, Washington. The population was 7,905 at the 2010 census. The Mukilteo Historic District is a national historic district that includes parts of downtown and along First Avenue. It was designated as a National Historical Landmark in 1970. The town was founded on April 18, 1850 by John and Martha (Nelson) Walsh from Ireland with the intent of making it a port for trade with Asia. In 1851 they organized the first civic meeting in Mukilteo which voted to name the town after George Vancouver who had just explored Puget Sound. In 1861 John Walsh died and his wife Martha took over leadership of the community and continued to lead it until her death in 1865. In 1870 Mukilteo became the county seat of King County and its first post office opened under this name on May 1st. The City of Seattle annexed part of eastern Mukilteo in 1904 but continues to use Mukilteo's original name today even though Seattle has more residents. By 1907 there were no more businesses open in downtown because most people had moved away to become farmers or fishermen. It wasn't until 1928 when an influx of Italian immigrants changed all that when many shops began opening up again such as Elaborato Italian Grocery which still remains open today! In 1937 another group of Italians immigrated and started their own grocery store called Pizzeria d'Italia across from what is now Union Station; that store still stands today! Mukilteo continued to grow slowly through out the years with only 2 annexations until 1959 when Snohomish County annexed much of eastern Mukilteo including much of downtown including its iconic clock tower! In 1990s development brought about new restaurants, bars, apartments and offices within walking distance of each other while also creating some challenges for old buildings such as Pizzeria d'Italia which had been around since before World War II but continued operations despite being demolition multiple times!
