Mukilteo is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,158 at the 2000 census. It is the largest community in King County by area. Mukilteo is located on Puget Sound and straddles the border of Seattle and Bellevue counties. The town was founded by Englishman John James Audubon in 1836 as a small trading post near present-day Mukilteo beach. In 1853, Audubon donated land to the town for its incorporation into King County. In 1916, the name of Mukilteo was changed from Audubon to Mukilteo after the explorer David Thompson discovered it while exploring Puget Sound for British Columbia lumber companies. In 1938, during World War II, Mukilteo became an airfield for Boeing aircraft production at Everett Air Force Base. The facilities were used until 1959 when they were transferred to University of Washington research lab responsibility and are now known as DHARPA's "Wizards" campus. Mukilteinians have been settled throughout their history with some settling permanently in what is now Mukiltein while others came transiently or temporarily over time; many of these early settlers remain today including most notably Alice Paul who led Key West-style Seminole Indian resistance against Spanish colonial rule in 1898-99 before moving permanently to Olympia Fields (now Kirkland) in 1912 and becoming an American first lady; her husband Theodore Roosevelt also served two terms as President of New York City before he died aged 94 years old there in 1904; both his mother Helena Roosevelt (1851-1925) and grandmother Anna Roosevelt Keats (1850-1925) also lived here prior to their respective husbands’ electioneering careers respectively - all three women being important political figures from Tacoma’s “First Lady Town” during this period which spanned many decades Of course other notable people associated with or living/working here during that time include: WJLH disc jockey Herb Alpert (billed as Juke joint man), Everett Mayor Wes Uhlmann (who later ran for Congress on a Kokanee ticket!), etc., etc... so needless to say much has changed since then!
