Although these systems used cast iron plates or lenses, they all remained relatively simple compared to later designs which featured various gears, screws, rods and cams[4], making them some of the most popular amateur telescope mounting systems ever devised! During World War II several hundred Scalextric mounts were produced by United States Military Armaments Corp (USMC) under licence from British companies such as Brown & Williamson[5] and Weymann & Sons[6]. These mounts typically utilised tubular steel tubing rather than cast iron plates or lenses which allowed greater flexibility in positioning the telescope inside or outside of the mount itself [7],[8], making them ideal for use with either short or long focal lengths owing to their compatibility with variety of optics products available during this wartime period[9],[10]. Unfortunately due to their limited availability during World War II many Scalextric mounts still remain unassembled today remnants of an era whenscope mounting technology was rapidly evolving!
