The name change came about because it became difficult for people in Starvation Creek to find a fair market price for their produce when they sold their goods outside of Mountlake Terrace. In 1893, Mountlake Terrace incorporated as a town under the name of "Mountlake Terrace". At first only white people lived there; later black residents moved into the community as well. In 1955, when King County was created from parts of Puget Sound and Seattle Township, Mountlake Terrace was placed within it under its own jurisdiction. On July 1, 1959, all but 2 percent of Mountlake Terrace's residents voted to become an unincorporated village again under their own governance with instructions from then-mayor John Weingarten that "the village should be like an American suburb—quiet but thriving." That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as Weingarten Plaza - home (and future office building) of KING-TV until 1996 and now used by Boeing Co., Microsoft Surface Pro 3s & other businesses. The original plaza still stands today next to Interstate 5 South near Safeco Field and has been reborn as Friendship Village Park which offers cultural events/ performances throughout summertime including jazz concerts and rock fests etcetera Accordingly due largely to this revitalization efforts over time much new housing development has taken place adjacent or within walking distance or just minutes' drive away from many existing communities making MtLakeTerrace one arguably one of most active suburban areas in King County today with more than 6000 registered households! newest retail development taking center stage being anchored by Safeco Field which anchors much recent population growth as well!

In 1868, James Aikens purchased 320 acres (12 ha) of land east of Seattle for $1,000 from John Sayre. Aiken developed this land into a town named after him, Mountlake Terrice. By 1870, there were about 100 residents living in Mountlake Terrice; by 1880 it had increased to 350 residents. In 1892 Home Depot opened its first store near the intersection of Northeast 127th Street and Southwest Pacific Highway; this helped to spur development around this intersection as homebuilders sought to build more stores close to customers rather than away from them on busy streets such as NW 144th Street and NE 132nd Street (). In 1924, the school district which included Mountlake Terrace schools became part ofKing County Schools when it was created following consolidation of many regional school districts across King County.
