The town was founded in 1881 by George Eastman and his wife, Ann Dunham, on land that they had purchased from the Yakima Indian Nation. Mountlake Terrace became an incorporated town in 1907. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to Mountlake Terrace were George Eastman and Ann Dunham who arrived in 1881. They were followed by others who settled there over time including James Waugh, David Willamette, John Sprague, Augustus Earle and others. Over time Mountlake Terrace grew into a small town with a population of 2,711 as of 2010. It is home to many businesses including health insurance company Anthem Blue Cross Northwest Services Inc., Everett-based Metropole Coffee & Tea Company and Sony Pictures Studios Northwest Inc.. Mountlake Terrace is known for its beautiful redwoods which can be seen from nearly every house in the town. The trees are also well-known for their annual show known as the Redwood Festival which takes place throughout October.
Mountlake Terrace was founded in 1792 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy. The area now includes Mountlake Terrace and the adjacent neighborhoods of Arlington Heights, Park Ridge, Lincoln Woods and Bethesda. The Polk family name is still used to this day in Mountlake Terrace. The first settler on the site was Captain John Sellers who arrived in 1792 with his family from England. He built a log cabin on what is now the north side of Mountlake Terrace. It is said that he named the location after himself, as he had always felt at home on the Sayre Mountain Range which forms part of Washington's eastern border. Sellers' cabin was replaced by a more modern structure in 1824 when Governor Isaac Stevens granted permission for two settlements to be platted on the east side of Mountlake Terrace between Rosslyn Road and Harper Street. By 1827, there were nine families living in Mountlake Terrace: six British immigrants and three Americans (Robert Livingston, future President James Buchanan; Solomon Northup, later United States Senator from New York; Israel Putnam). In 1828, agricultural settlers began arriving from Canada with land grants covering 3/4 of present-day Mountlake Terrice Boulevard and much of today's east side including Arlington Heights and Park Ridge. By 1830 there were over fifty residents living inMountLakeTerrace with twenty-six businesses established along its streetscape including four breweries (Albany Brewing Company; George’s Brewery; Eagle Brewery; Potomac Beer & Cigar Store) . In 1836 entrepreneur Nicholas Culpeper bought 1/2 mile east of present-day Arlington Heights Boulevard for $1 less than what would later become Maryland Avenue and developed it into one of Washington's most prestigious addresses – Culpeper House today remains one of only a few structures standing from that period within MtLakeTerrace itself.. In 1847 General Order No 1 issued by President George Washington authorized construction to begin immediately upon completion of Grant Street Bridge over Anacostia River connecting Alexandria VA to Washington D C – this marked an important milestone not only because it allowed wheeled traffic across the river but also demonstrated U S government support for annexation efforts by Mexico .. during Reconstruction following reconstruction efforts following slavery’s abolition in 1865 many blacks moved into MtLakeTerrace through white flight or relocation programs sponsored by Northern philanthropists .. Mount lake terrace continued as an exclusively white enclave until 1974 when black students started attending Northwest Indian School located just southwest of Arlington Hts
