Gun targets have been a popular pastime in Mountlake Terrace for centuries. The first gun target was erected on the present site of the Mountlake Terrace High School in 1892. Prior to that, there were three other small round-about targets located near the high school. In 1896, a new large target stand was built at the high school and became known as "The Place." In 1911, a local business owner donated ten acres of land to the town for use as a park. The park inclusion included two large rifleslingers made by J.B. Stevens and installed in front of the Park Office building. These gunslingers served as targets until 1930 when they were removed and replaced with an American Eagle machinegun which remains operational today (see photo). In 1916, Mountlake Terrace had its first rifle match which took place at what is now Soccer Park. At that time, all matches were held outdoors before moving to their current location inside the high school in 1922 after it was re-zoned for Playground use (see photo). Over time, different types of firearms have been used as gun targets including shotguns, pistols and rifles. Today, shooting ranges are available throughout Mountlake Terrace so people can enjoy this popular pastime without having to leave their homes!

Mountlake Terrace, Washington is a census-designated place located in Pierce County, Washington. The population was 6,853 at the 2000 census. The community lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Rainier and is bordered by the towns of Enumclaw to the north and Clallam Bay to the south. It is part of Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Mountlake Terrace" is derived from an aboriginal word meaning "highland meadow". In 1847, Gold Rush prospectors discovered gold near present-day Mountlake Terrace. Mining operations began in 1849, and soon Mountlake Terrace was known for its rich gold deposits. The economy of the community changed when railroads arrived in the late 19th century, connecting Tacoma with Seattle and other districts in Western Washington. Railroads destroyed much of what had been built around Mountlake Terrace during this time, but some remnants remain today including a golf course and a number of small businesses. During World War II, Mountlake Terrace served as a munitions plant supplying Northwest Asia with weapons used in the Japanese Invasion of China. After the war, many residents left for various reasons including job opportunities outside of Puget Sound or because prices for housing were too high in Seattle; however, a few remained until they moved out during gentrification efforts beginning in the late 1990s which aimed to redevelop areas surrounding Mt Lake Tangle shopping center into more upscale neighborhoods catering to young professionals and their families model cul de sacs style homes perched atop hills overlooking downtownSeattleites could only watch as lawn care services mushroomed next door while Starbucks expanded up hill every few blocks until you could smell peppermint past Kirkland Community College

Mountlake Terrace, Washington is a small town located in southeastern Puget Sound on the south bank of the Columbia River. It was founded by John Jacob Astor in 1836 as part of his Oregon settlement, and became a small city within its own limits in 1907. Mountlake Terrace has grown steadily since then, becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The town features a number of historical buildings and landmarks, including the Masonic Temple and Mrs. Astor's House.
The first Europeans to visit Mountlake Terrace were the Spanish in 1592. The name "Mountlake Terrace" was given to the area by Captain John Stephens of the British naval ship HMS Discovery, who named it after his home town of Maple Leaf in Canada. The first permanent settler on Mountlake Terrace was Benjamin Vaughn, a Hudson's Bay Company trader and fur trapper, in 1808. He built a cabin on the ridge that overlooked Puget Sound. In 1814, when Washington state was formed from parts of Oregon and Washington, Mountlake Terrace became part of Seattle. In 1861, after Seattle's incorporation as a city, Mountlake Terrace became its second ward. In 1916, Seattle annexed much of what is now Tacoma and renamed it Mountlake Terrace Heights; this annexation created a new ward for Mountlake Terrace and increased its population from about 50 people to over 100 people. In 1928, during the Great Depression, Mtlake Terrace's middle class started to decline as businesses closed or went out of business. This led to an increase in crime and social unrest among the low-income residents of Mtlake Terrace Heights and nearby areas such as Lakeview Square. On October 14, 1928, two young men—John Sinclair Lewis (1907-1989) and Clarence Campbell (1895-1964)—pulled off one of Seattle's most daring heists: they stole $2 million dollars from the Franklin Trust Co., which had stored money at First National Bank on Capitol Hill before being moved to Crystal City near Boeing Field in 1945 during World War II for safekeeping. Their success generated national media attention that helped spur change within Seattle furthering their goal of becoming an open society with more democratic values than those found in early America. That year also saw the birth of noted author Alice Sebold (1906-1983).
