In recent years, there has been an increase in development around MtLakeTerrace Boulevard which connects the town to Bellevueand Issaquahand other larger cities within King County. This development has brought new jobs into the village while also impacting traffic congestion on Interstate 5 near milepost 137.

Mountlake Terrace is a small town in Washington state located on the Olympic Peninsula. The town was originally built by fur traders and missionaries who, in 1819, founded the community of Nisqually after reaching an agreement with the Yakama Nation. In 1841, Mountlake Terrace was renamed to honor James K. Polk, then the United States President. It has beenUrlably inhabited by humans since at least 1250 BC when two groups of people from what is now British Columbia set out to explore and trade with the locals. The first permanent settler in Mountlake Terrace was George Vancouver, who arrived in 1792 and built his wooden trading house on the current site of Nisqually Falls. Vancouver also named Mountlake Terrace after himself—the name later being anglicized to Mountlake Place. After initial success as a fur-trading center, Mountlake Terrice began to decline during the 19th century due to its location on a strategic route linking Puget Sound with China and other markets. However, it resumed growth beginning in the early 20th century due to new development within Seattle and its proximity to Mt Lake Union—a body of water that formed when two glaciers melted over time. By 1925, Mountlake Terrace had reached its peak as an agricultural community with near-total self-sufficiency in wheat; however, this prosperity ended following World War II when production at Boeing Airplane Manufacturing Company increased demand for airline luggage storage space throughout Puget Sound and Western Washington. Since 1975, much effort has been made to revitalize Mountlake Terrace as a cultural destination that attracts visitors from all over North America; including students from Seattle University’s Department of History & Anthropology who are conducting research on early Northwest Native American settlements along Oregon’s Tillamook Coast during this period of great change (see: "Mount lake terrace: history through archaeology"). In recent years there have been several initiatives launched to promote education about local history through public events such as historical walks or market tours; while also preserving some of MtLake Union’s natural features including ancient shoreline shellfish beds which provide important sustenance for local orcas (see: “MtLake Union trash issue deepens worries about Signs Point Park neighborhood).
