Mountlake Terrace is a census-designated place in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. In 1916, the town of Mountlake Terrace merged with neighbouring White River Junction to form what is now known as Seattle. On July 15, 1921 Mountlake Terrance became a city when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the state legislature under which larger municipalities could be created by merging smaller ones within one county without being taxed again. As Seattle grew bigger and more diverse than White River Junction did, so too did Mountlake Terrace's demand for services such as schools and hospitals that would not have been possible in either town if they had remained separate entities. This led toMountlakeTerrace becoming one of America's most vibrant small cities during its golden years before suburbanization began to take hold throughout most of Northwest America in the late 20th century
