Mountlake Terrace is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 2,839 as of the 2010 census. It lies on Puget Sound and borders Seattle to the north, Bellevue to the east, Mountlake Terrace Park to the south and east, and Kirkland to the west. The name Mountlake Terrace is derived from two different places: one was in what is now Mountlake Terrace Park (the original name of which was "Mount Pleasant"), while the other was at what is now Capitol Hill. The first place had been named after General James K. Polk's family home in Georgia; when he became president in 1848, he ordered that it be renamed for his friend and mentor Senator Samuel Adams Maxwell (1794-1872). In 1892, developers bought 8 acres of land near what is now Chinatown for $1 million dollars. They began building a large tract of houses known as "The Lakes" which stretched from Bellevue Avenue north to First Avenue NE. By 1900 there were over 100 homes built there. Today only a few remain; most were replaced by high-rise buildings during the late 20th century and early 21st century. The first post office opened in Mountlake Terrace on July 1, 1892 with William Potter as its first mailman. In 1909, Mt Baker Road was completed connecting downtown Seattle with Kenmore Valley via an unpaved road shared by both communities until 1923 when it became part of Interstate 5. This isolationism led to some tension between these two communities until 1955 when they merged into one entity under new government regulations known as amalgamation law where any community could create its own school district if it desired but all residents must attend public schools within their district unless they opted out through charters or referendum proceedings authorized by state statute instead.) This action removed much local autonomy for Mt Lake TTerrace residents who had long complained about not having control over their schools or being forced to share services with adjacent districts such as Redmond or Bothell

Mountlake Terrace, Washington is a town located in Pierce County, Washington. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Mountlake Terrace takes its name from the ridge that dominates the town center. It was organized on February 14, 1851 as a post office and plat of land granted to John Witherspoon by the United States government. In 1853, the Soo Locks Bridge was built over Puget Sound connecting Mountlake Terrace with Seattle. In 1912, Mountlake Terrace became a city when it annexed portions of SeaTac and Shoreline Park. In 1959, Seattle annexed what is now Mountlake Terrace into its city limits. The annexation left Mountlake Terrice without an elected mayor or city council and gave rise to some controversy over how much control the small town had over its larger neighbor. In 2007, however, City Council passed an ordinance granting full authority to the Mayor and City Council of MountLakeTerrace with responsibility for all matters related to municipal governance within MountLakeTerrice boundaries- including zoning regulation and budgeting. The first people in what is now MountLakeTerrice arrived after crossing Puget Sound on Canoe Lake in 1792 led by Chief Sealthyanka (Soo Locks). They were drawn by gold discovered near present-day Olympia while exploring for new territory east of Juan de Fuca Strait. By 1800 there were about 150 people living hereabouts according to pioneer George Vancouver; their homes consisted of dugouts made from logs raised on stilts above water during long winter crossings across Elliott Bay. Some residents also built log buildings constructed between deepwater beaches along South Beach near present day West Seattle University property before 1850s - these structures are still standing today adjacent to University Way SW/Route 99 intersection SE (known then as "Beach Avenue"). A few years later logging ceased completely in this area making way for agricultural growth especially around Rice Lake where crops were grown until recent times; local historian Dick Hirschauer has written extensively about this period including his book " Pioneer Days: The History of Mt lake terrace" The first school in what is nowMountLakeTerrance opened up shop in 1830 when Rev James White offered instruction at his cabin on Kettle Creek which sits today just south of Interstate 5 northeast corner SR 520 north end road close to First Baptist Church off I-5 exit ramp; carpentry classes started being offered soon afterwards as well! Reverend White's students learned how important it was for young menfolk like themselves “to have something better than bartering with savages” so they could get ahead! From those humble beginnings education grew gradually more available until 1902 when Mrs Jane Alexander donated land next door at 419 Northeast NE – School District No 221 accepted her offer thereby helping build North Kitsilano High School one block away! Today North Kitsilane High School offers many opportunities for student success such as sports, music etcetera thanks largely to Ms Jane Alexander’s donation! Mountlake Terrace was founded by Captain George Vancouver on July 20, 1792 as a port of entry for the new colony of British Columbia. The town grew quickly, and in 1822 it became a district of the city of Seattle. In 1847, Mountlake Terrace was designated as the site of the first commercial settlement in Washington Territory. The town continued to grow, and in 1870 it became an incorporated city. Mountlake Terrace experienced rapid growth during World War II as a military base and industrial center. After the war, the population declined and the city gradually lost its status as an important regional center. However, over time it has regained some of its former prominence as a bedroom community for Seattleites.
