The name means "mountain ridge" in Greek. The first European settlers in Mountlake Terrace were wagoners who journeyed down what is now Interstate 5 from Oregon in 1851-52. After arriving they named their small settlement after Mount Rainier which they saw rising high above them on their trip across North America. In 1853 Congress created King County andumbering it with Mtlake Terrace as one of its three townships within that county. In 1911 when Washington Statehood was granted to Washington you could marry only citizens of your state so a group of Native American women decided to form a matrimonial society with all white men in order to get marriage licenses for themselves and their Indian husbands as well as better access to education for their children. They met at Seattle's Masonic Temple where they chose Rev. Drury Cranch as president of the new organization called Mountlake Terrace Maternity Home Society Incorporated which became available for issuance of marriage licenses starting on February 14th 1912 On April 25th 1912 three days before his death Reverend Drury gave his last sermon at Vancouver's Pacific Lutheran Church and then he took his final walk through Mountlake Terrice before dying at home less than an hour later surrounded by family including wife Alice who had accompanied him everywhere . His son Clifford took over running this home until her death in 1978 .
Mountlake Terrace is located in the city of Seattle, Washington. The name is derived from Mountlake Terrace Park which was created in 1909 and served as a public recreation area for the surrounding neighborhood. The park was later annexed by Seattle in 1912 and became the nucleus of the current Mountlake Terrace neighborhood. The neighborhood continued to grow rapidly during World War II as more people moved into the area because of war-time demand for housing. After the war, many new businesses sprang up in what had been a largely residential district, creating even more pressure on the park. In 1958, due to this growing population and rising costs, Lester Fenton purchased the park and began to make changes which would eventually result in its transformation into today's Mountlake Terrace Park.
