Mount Vernon, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 10,574 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon was one of the first towns in the Columbia Valley and was founded by Captain John Jacob Astor on July 4, 1811. The town has been home to many famous people and organizations including George Washington and his family; Mount Vernon Cemetery; and Mount Vernon School District. The Astors donated land for what is now the University of Puget Sound in 1907. In 1934, a group of local businessmen formed the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce to help promote economic development in the area. In 1948, it became part of the Northwest Development Corporation which helped develop downtown Seattle into an attractive commercial center. In 1978, Mount Vernon's Olde Town Committee renamed its main commercial street "Athletic Boulevard" in honor of former professional basketball player Julius Erving who had supported their efforts to revive downtown shopping districts around Seattle
