One resident, John Thornton, who lived on First Street at what is now called Greenway Avenue, started building his own firearms collection from local resources. He eventually became known as "the Father Of Rifle Stockmaking In America." Thornton continued creating high quality riflestocks until 1811 when he sold his assets to Major Christopher Lengel who took up residence in Mount Vernon proper. From then on, rifle stock making would come under the guidance of Major Lengel's son Christopher Fenton Lengel Jr., who would continue developing new techniques and products until 1873 when he passed away leaving his business to his son Christopher Fenton Lengel III., also known asCFLJr.'s father-in-law (Fenton). During this time period there was an advancement in technology which allowed for greater accuracy when manufacturing riflestocks. This technological advance was spearheaded by Colonel James Bowie who developed a method for welding metal pieces together which allowed for a far greater range in constructing riflescopes than had been possible before. Today there are several different methods used to weld metal parts together which gives rise to different types of riflestocks such as hot forging or cold forging; however all share one common goal - making sure that each piece meets or exceeds expectations while providing an improved shooting experience for shooters across different platforms including handguns and shotguns
