After their death, many of their possessions went into storage until 1959 when they were donated to the Smithsonian Institution as part of the National Museum of American History collection. Today, Mount Vernon continues to be used as a base camp for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, tennis, golfing, birdwatching, etc., making it a popular tourist destination around the world.
