Mount Vernon, Washington was founded in 1786 as a small trading post on the Rappahannock River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1802 it had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1802, Mount Vernon became the capital of the United States because New York City was not yet established. The first American President, George Washington, lived in Mount Vernon from 1789 to 1797. After his death, his widow lived in the home for many years before selling it to General James K. Polk in 1921. It was also during this time that Mount Vernon began to develop its own optical industry. In 1951, the United States Postal Service moved their offices from their original location at 5th and G Streets NW to what is now called Building A-1 at 501 First Street NW in order to better serve the needs of the optic industry within Mount Vernon itself. This move allowed for more growth and development within Mount Vernon's optic community as businesses began venturing into this new market space. In 1978, an additional building were added to Mount Vernon’s downtown core which housed both a business incubator and an art gallery; this addition helped continue to support mountvernon’s growing economy while facilitating increased interactions between businesses and residents alike. Today, all aspects of our community – business activity, cultural events (such as Oktoberfest), arts & music performances – take place within or near one another thanks to our rich history!

As president, he faced another series of critical decisions that impacted both his country and its people – such as ordering American troops into battle in the Revolutionary War (the first time American soldiers had been used in combat) or appointing conservative judges to crucial courtrooms. Nonetheless, even when life couldn’t always be easy for Washington, he never gave up on his dream of leading America into a better future. On July 4, 1790, the first national anthem was sung at Mount Vernon by U.S. President George Washington and the U.S. military as a way of pays homage to the patriots who fought in the American Revolution. The song has been preserved and is now sung every Fourth of July in both the United States and Canada.
