The area around Mount Vernon became part of Prince George's County after the American Revolution. In 1791, George Washington purchased 1/3 of what is now Mount Vernon from the Monongahela tribe for $5,000. Washington moved into his home on White House Road in 1795 and began construction on what would becomeMount Vernon. He hired Scottish architect David Lloyd Wright to design the house which opened to public view in 1801. The architecture ofMount Vernon reflects Washington's personal style which combined classical elements with Indian knotweed (the plants were believed to have magical properties) designs. In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Mount Vernon during his presidential campaign and spent several days touring it before returning home via carriage; he later declared it "the most beautiful place I ever saw." After World War II, additional damage was done to both buildings by vandals; however, restoration efforts have since returned both homes to their original condition
