Mount Vernon, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington on the north bank of the Willamette River. The town was founded by Captain George Vancouver in 1792 as a trading post on the Oregon Trail. The first settlers were British and came from England, Scotland, and Ireland. The first president of the United States, George Washington, lived there from 1799-1801. In 1802, President James K. Polk moved into the house and used it as a Headquarters during his administration. After Polk's death in 1904, Mrs. Polk continued to live there until her death in 1908. The house was then passed down to Mr. and Mrs. Mellon who maintained it until 1951 when it was sold to the National Park Service for use as a Visitor Center and Museum
