Mount Vernon was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his family. The town, located on the banks of the Potomac River, soon became a center for business and politics. In 1801, Washington purchased land on the east bank of the river from Francis Scott Key. He named the property Mount Vernon because it resembled a virile male donkey that he had seen in one of his travels. The original house, which still stands today, was built between 1802 and 1805. Washington died in office in 1800 and bequeathed his home to his wife Martha Custis Washington and their son GeorgeWashington Jr. The home continued to be used by the Washingtons until 1865 when it was sold to James M. Kappett Jr., an American businessman who donated it to Mount Vernon College (now Virginia Tech). In 1792, Mount Vernon was founded by George Washington as the home of his father, James Washington. The estate was purchased in 1800 by Pierre Charles de La Salle and changed hands multiple times before becoming the property of John Marshall in 1824. In 1865, the United States acquired it from Marshalls descendants and renamed it Mount Vernon Hill after General Ulysses S. Grant's General Headquarters on nearby Capitol Hill. The house became a national monument in 1937 and is now owned by the National Park Service. Mount Vernon has been called "the first American presidential palace" and "the most complete example of a presidential mansion built between 1785 and 1800." The original Mount Vernon property comprised around 5 acres with a single house that would later be replaced with five separate buildings: an early hunting lodge known as Old West House; 1st Lady's Lodge; 2nd Lady's Lodge; State Guest House; and President's Mansion complex including three floors of underground dwellings, artillery shelters, stores, offices, gardens, kitchens, barracks for 25 Officers (later increased to 30), servants' quarters and farmhands' barracks were also built on or near this site over time totaling up to 100 acres plus additional land around the hilltop.(1) Most importantly though was its location – just outside what is now Washington D.C.– providing presidents with easy access to their primary constituency back then instead of having to go down Pennsylvania Avenue or out into Georgetown or Baltimore where they lived then(2). On July 4th of that year-a day celebrated annually throughout America for its commemoration of GeorgeWashington's life and work-Mount Vernon reopened to the public as part of a federally sponsored restoration project spearheaded by Vice President John F Kennedy and Secretary Robert McNamara. Since then, it has been open every day except Christmas (when it is closed due to conservation efforts) and has become an iconic symbol of American history and culture both at home and abroad
