Mount Vernon is a historic home located in Fairfax, Virginia. It was built by George Washington in 1799-1800 and is a 3 1/2 story, rectangular stone structure on the east side of Mount Vernon Square. It has a slate roof and gable end with quoins and an entablature. The original structure was enlarged between 1802 and 1807 by James Monroe, and then again between 1814 and 1817 by John Quincy Adams. The current structure was completed in 1800. Mount Vernon served as the presidential home of George Washington from 1799 to 1800, John Adams from 1801 to1809, James Monroe from 1811 to1813, and Andrew Johnson from 1865 to 1865. The property also housed the President's Mansion until it was destroyed in 1945 by fire. The site of Mount Vernon was purchased by George Washington in 1799 for $10,000 after he had been offered land near Richmond but declined because he did not want his family living nearer to Tory politicians who were trying to discredit him during the French Revolution. In 1800, Washington began construction on what would become his presidential mansion at Mount Vernon after receiving assurances that he would receive title if he lived there long enough (he died three years later). After first choosing nearby Alexandria as his official residence due to its more central location within Virginia's capital city limits (Alexandria became the national capital following independence), Washington moved into Mount Vernon on July 24, 1800. As president of America, he used it as his personal residence until his death in January 1865 at age 72 years old – making it one of the longest-serving presidents in American history. In addition to serving as president of America (1799-1800; 1801-1809; James Monroe from 1811-1813; Andrew Johnson 1865-65), George Washington also served two terms as mayor of Fairfax County (1793-97; 1798-1800). He vetoed legislation twice while mayor because it conflicted with his private beliefs about religious freedom which were unpopular among some Virginians at the time. In recognition of this service under difficult circumstances, park officials plan To honor him with a memorial plaque dedicated shortly before Memorial Day each year when all citizens are allowed access to view it
