Mount Vernon is a historic home located at Mount Vernon, Fairfax County, Virginia. It was built in 1792 and is a two-story, six bay white stone structure with an Ionic order facade. It is rectangular in shape and has side gables. The front facade features an eight-column portico supported by four Tuscan columns and crowned by a pedimented roof. There are two large circular windows on the first story, each surmounted by a small terra-cotta window; the second story has three such windows. The interior of the house is divided into five rooms: the symmetrical main room on the north side of the house, which served as its vestibule; two smaller rooms to either side of it; and one servant's quarters across from it on the south side. The house was initially used as a barracks for Washington's troops during their campaign against British forces in North America. After his inauguration as president in 1797, Washington moved into Mount Vernon permanently and began to live there full time. In 1801 he commissioned architect James Ketchum to redesign it into what it remains today – one of only a few homes throughout history that has been completely redesigned multiple times (the others being Belvoir House and White House). Over time, Mount Vernon became increasingly ceremonial and use changed from presidential residence to museum (it now houses both), while also serving as a popular tourist destination. Today, Mount Vernon continues to be property of Fairfax County but is open to visitors Lewes Museum of History & Art (serving admission free) every day except Mondays between 10am-4pm EST.
