Mount Vernon is a town in King County, Washington, United States. It is the most populous municipality in King County and the county seat of Mount Vernon Township. The population was 8,836 at the 2010 census. The first guns were made here in 1792 by George Carleton and Major John Henderson. That same year, Mount Vernon residents revolted against British rule and elected their own government as the "First Municipal Republic of Mount Vernon." At that time Mount Vernon had no arms or military protection and was considered an unarmed village. In 1812, President James K. Polk ordered Ulysses S. Grant to burn down Fort Vancouver because it was reported that its cannons could fire on American ships passing through Seattle Harbor without warning the native nations living near both ports. Grant complied but placed cannons inside Fort Vancouver so they could still be used if needed should any hostilities break out between America and Canada during his term as president. In 1898, after Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act, Mount Vernon became one of several communities within what would become National City (later known as Los Angeles). Today's economy is based largely on tourism with a small amount of manufacturing done locally for goods like shoes and clothing

Since its foundation, Mount Vernon has been used as a presidential retreat, hosting presidents such as George Washington, James K. Polk, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson during their terms of office. It is also known for its unique architecture and furnishings, which have been used by Presidents Jackson, Kennedy, Reagan, Clintons and Obamas among others.
In 1790 the Washington family moved from their home in New York to Mount Vernon. The move was a financial disaster for the Washington family, as they had no money to purchase any land. But they made a go of it and gradually acquired more land. In 1814, after five years of hard work, the Washington family had acquired 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land on Mount Vernon Peninsula. This property would eventually become one of America's most prestigious estates. President George Washington resided here until his death in 1800.
