In 1847, Mount Vernon resident and gunsmith Amos Kendall designed a new type of muzzleloader rifle that used a barrel-mounted ramrod to recoil the rounds from the magazine into the shooter's hand. This weapon, called the Kendall Rifle, became popular in Washington State and other border states due to its simplicity and its ability to fire multiple rounds quickly. Mount Vernon is a historic home located in Mount Vernon, Fairfax County, Virginia. It was built about 1799 by George Washington and his wife Martha Jefferson, and is a two-story, five bay symmetrical structure of brick and mortar.
