Mount Vernon is a historic estate located on the eastern slope of Mount Vernon Hill in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was built by George Washington in 1799–1800 as his Presidential Mansion. The mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The original Mount Vernon consisted of a single large building, with an attached two-story wooden fence and stable block. Construction began in 1799 and continued until 1800, when Washington moved into his new Presidential Mansion nearby. For many years it served as the only American presidential home, rivaling Versailles and Buckingham Palace. Mount Vernon has been used for official residence by both Presidents George Washington and James K. Polk since 1912. In 1978, Congress voted to add three more buildings to the National Register: The first floor of the old stable block; The Second Floor of the main house; and A contributing lot at No. 5 on Mount Vernon Road (now Fairfax Drive). These additions are now known collectively as "The Annex". It is generally thought that George Washington selected Mount Vernon as his presidential home because he found its location ideal: positioned midway between Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia on an elevated plateau overlooking both capitals made it vulnerable only to artilleryfire from enemy forces besieging Richmond or Petersburg; while also having direct access to both navigable waterways (the Potomac River and Susquehanna River) for purposes of transportation and trade with other parts of America

The estate was built by George Washington on land purchased from the Native American tribe of Potomac Indians in 1791. The property includes a main house, a library, a chapel, four servant quarters, and many other buildings and structures. Mount Vernon has been the home of Presidents George Washington and John Adams as well as their families since 1795. The first president to live at Mount Vernon was George Washington's father, James Bowyer Washington. After James' death in 1799, Mount Vernon passed through several owners before it finally came into the hands of Colonel John Walker in 1802. In 1838, it was purchased by General Robert Ewell Lee for $25,000. During its time as Lee's home, Mount Vernon underwent various changes including being made into a military academy during World War II and becoming a national monument following his death in 1945. Since 2000, there have been efforts to renovate and restore Mount Vernon both inside and outside of its original boundaries which have resulted in numerous new studies about its history and architecture along with updates on current events at the estate such as recent refurbishments undertaken by volunteers led by Preservation Virginia Incorporated (PVI). As part of this effort PVI also created an online resource called "A Photographic History of Mount Vernon" which documents over 1 million images depicting all aspects of historical life at Mount Vernon from pre- Revolutionary War times until present day.
