The Mount Vernon Estate is a historic home located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was built in 1799, and is a three story, Federalist style brick structure. The first occupant of the house was General James K. Polk who lived there from 1845 to 1849. The second occupant was the Marquis de Lafayette who resided there from 1800 to 1805 and again from 1814 to 1817. After Lafayette's death, his widow moved into the mansion until her death in 1840. From 1840 to 1861, it was occupied by John Adams' wife Abigail Adams while they were living at Montpelier in Vermont. In 1861, she moved back to Mount Vernon where she died seven years later on October 14th, 1865 aged 82 years old. Her remains were interred at Mount Vernon Market House which stands today next door to the house she once inhabited as well as other memorabilia related to her life such as a dress worn by her during one of her public appearances and correspondence that has been preserved at the Library of Congress since 1917 Mount Vernon became associated with American presidents starting with George Washington because he spent most of his childhood here before moving away for military service during the Revolutionary War After Washington's death in 1799, his son George Washington Parke Custis took over care of Mount Vernon until his death in1848 John Quincy Adams also kept an office here until he left office in 1825 Randolph Bourne served as Postmaster General from 1865-1867 but resigned due to health problems He is buried at Arlington Cemetery adjacent to Ulysses S Grant As time passed new owners would move into or take possession of various parts of Mount Vernon including its slave quarters between 1886 and 1913 when they sold them all off ; however some significant portions remain unoccupied today including its Engine House which still resides across First Street from where it once stood
