Mount Vernon is a historic plantation house located near Georgetown, Washington County, Maryland. It was built about 1795 by George Washington and his wife Martha Dandridge, and is a three-story, Greek Revival style stone structure. The mansion has been altered several times since its construction, but retains much of its original appearance. Washington purchased the estate in 1794 from the wealthy John Adamson. He spent most of his time at Mount Vernon while he served as President of the United States. The first president's home was also located on the estate, but it burned down in 1814. In 1821, Washington moved to the White House and continued to use Mount Vernon as his personal home. His daughter Martha stayed at Mount Vernon until her death in 1837. After her death, Mount Vernon passed through various families before being acquired by General Robert Ewell during World War II for use as an airbase. It was later donated to the Smithsonian Institution and opens to visitors today.

The first president (George Washington) lived there from 1799-1799 while he prepared for his inauguration as president on April 4, 1799. After his inauguration, Mount Vernon served as the Executive Mansion until 1801 when it became the Presidential Palace again. In 1861, due to Confederate forces occupying D.C., Mount Vernon became an Arsenal for Confederate artillery under General Gouverneur KG McDowell until 1865 when it reverted back to its original status as a National Monument. From 1865-1881 it served as both the presidential residence and New York City's Customhouse before becoming an art museum again in 1929. Today Mount Vernon is open to tourists every day from 9am-4pm except during Christmas seasons when it is closed from 1pm-4pm due to restrictions set by local authorities
