Moses Lake is a small town in Washington County, located in the eastern corner of the state. The community was formed in 1907 when two sawmills were combined and named Moses Lake after the biblical Israelite leader Moses. The milling industry ceased operations in the late 1920s, but it is still remembered for its contribution to local economy. In recent years, Moses Lake has enjoyed growth as a result of its role as a bedroom community for Spokane Valley. Moses Lake had been inhabited by Native Americans since at least 1810. Chief Seattle's encampment was located near present-day Moses Lake, on what is now part of Spokane County. Father Gabriel Arcangel built a mission here in 1847, and Mission Creek ran through the town center until it was diverted by North Bend Road eastward about 1900. By 1907, however, there were only a few dwellings and no mills either. The sawmills at Moses Lake were first mentioned in 1854 when George Stephenson donated land for them on which to build his new iron works Nearby settlers included David Capps and Jno Bigham who operated an inn called The Hermitage from 1855 to 1865 before moving upriver to what is now Cheney City; John Mabee who operated an inn called The Grove from 1870 to 1880; Henery Waddell who operated an hotel called Best Western Hotel from 1895 to 1905; James Sennett who founded Jardine’s Stores here in 1904; and Hiram Morse whose store opened at 17th Avenue SW&NW (now NW Ninth Street) on May 15, 1906 which became one of Spokane’s earliest commercial businesses However these early pioneers did not live long enough to see their establishments become popular tourist destinations today They are most notably remembered for their contributions to local history: David Capps donated land for Pioneer Hall which serves as both headquarters for the Museum of History & Industry (MOHI) and also houses exhibits related thereto; Henery Waddell donated funds towards construction of First Methodist Church – currently known as Spokesman United Methodist Church – which served as the town’s churches until 1909 When MOHI moved into its current building adjacent thereto in 1959 they again began using this property as their headquarters Other noteworthy historical events that took place within or around MosesLake include: 1897- Spokesman United Methodist Church dedication ceremonies are held here 1907- Formation of Moses Lake Chamber Of Commerce 1911- Construction begins on Masonic Lodge #2 – remains active today 1920- ceased production of sawmills at Moses Lakes Saw Mill 1964- founding of Bethel Lutheran School District #1 with members from Mohegan Sun Arena south side
Moses Lake was formed by glaciers in the late Pleistocene. The name Moses is derived from the ancient Hebrew word mashiach, meaning "the wayfarer." The lake was first named after Joseph, son of Jacob. In 1881, the town of Moses Lake was founded on the east side of Moses Lake.
