Moses Lake is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Moses Lake is a small town in the Yakima Valley of Washington, United States. The community was founded in 1868 by fur traders and settlers who named it for Moses, an early settler on the Yakima River. The population was 796 at the 2010 census. The town grew rapidly after gold discoveries were made nearby in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Railroads brought people and goods to Moses Lake, which became a commercial center during that time. In recent years, however, the economy has been struggling due to increases in Interstate 5 traffic and competition from larger towns such as Seattle. Moses Lake is located at (47.826686, -122.347694).According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 912 people, 367 households, and 248 families residing in the town. The population density was 20 people per square mile (7/km²). Moses Lake is a small town in Washington County, north of Moses Lake. It is on the east side of the Cascades and was founded in 1877 by farmers from eastern Washington. The community grew rapidly after oil was discovered there in 1926, and by 1940 it had reached a population of 1,500. By 1990, however, the population had declined to 500 and only 100 residents remain today. The initial settlers were farmers who started out around what is now the intersection of State Route 97 and US 191. They named their community after Moshe Dayan, an early settler in that area. Others who later moved to Moses Lake included Jacob Beiler and his family, who became owners of a sawmill at nearby Higgins Bayou (now called Westshore Boulevard). In 1878 those families also erected a store on what is now Main Street. Moses Lake quickly become an important center for oil production in southeastern Washington due to its location at the confluence of two major reservoirs - Black Mesa Reservoir on the west side of the lake and White Mesa Reservoir on the east side - both operated by Phillips Petroleum Company. And although production peaked in 1951, it continued until 1981 when deregulation led to increased competition among producers and forces prices down across much of North America. As a result, Moses Lake's economy declined for several years before rebounding beginning in late 1995 as new jobs developed related to alternative energy sources such as biotechnology and construction materials processing. Today, while decline continues throughout most parts of its history – with only 100 residents remaining since 1990 – Moses Lake still has significant things going for it including excellent infrastructure improvements being made including new roads/bridges/pumps/etc., top-notch schools (including one which offers college-level courses), good restaurants (particularly Italianate cuisine) as well as active civic groups that support various local causes
Moses Lake was a small body of water located in central Washington beginning in the 18th century. The name is derived from the Hebrew word meaning "water" and refers to an area that once extended along present-day Moses Lake and eastward to the Columbia River. The first white person to settle in what is now Moses Lake was James Earle Fraser, who built a cabin on the edge of the lake in 1824. In 1827, Brigham Young founded the Mormon Battalion at nearby Springdale, Utah, and soon after moved his people across the Snake River into what is now Oregon. In 1847, when Congress approved Kearny's proclamation creating Idaho out of western Wyoming and parts of eastern Montana, MosesLake became part of that new state.
