The name stuck and during the next few decades various organizations developed around this location - one being the Pioneer Land Company which commonly sold land east of Cedar Point Boulevard (now part of 116th Street) between Kittridge Avenue and First Avenue NW. In 1893, local lumberman James Fenton bought 6 acres from David Thompson at what is now corner of 116th Street NE and First Avenue NW for $425 In 1912, thanks to efforts by Governor Hiram Johnson, Congress passed an act authorizing creation of a park within Seattle's boundaries with funds set aside specifically for that purpose. On December 5, 1912 President Theodore Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9472 creating MosesLake National Park along with nearby Cedar Ridge Park as well as Alaskan Way Northeast (later Interstate 5). The first store opened in 1889 under license from then-Governor Willamette Valley Railroad Company president George Winton (Fenton 1907:10-11). A sawmill operated here until 1896 when it went out of business due to heavy competition from lumber mills operating farther downriver within Thurston County (Hanson 1968:249 n8). The first school opened in 1890 under license from then-Governor Willamette Valley Railroad Company president George Winton Jr., although learning wasn’t available until 1893 thanks to funds obtained through donations from local businesses including furniture maker Jervis & Sons(Hanson 1968:248 n9). In 1892–1893 two teachers taught 8th grade classes before moving up to 9th grade because no school could be found closer than Tacoma(Hanson 1968:247 n10; 206 n2; Hanson 1978a)). A second school opened later that year but closed due to lack of students and money(206n2; Hanson 1978b)). In 1928 a new elementary school building was built adjacent to what is now High School Drive/Red Road east of town center using taxpayer money provided by Thurston County.(206n2) This building served as both Elementary and Middle School until 1993 when supplementary high school services were added.(206n2) In 1932 two churches established themselves within or close proximately thereto including First Presbyterian Church which seated 300 worshipers by 1954 while German Methodist Episcopal Church had seating for 150 worshippers by 1922.(205a) Reverend Omer Hirsch officiated at both churches during these years.(205a) When Second World War started early enough many residents sent children away for PreK through 6th grades so that those children would not have been exposed too much directly or indirectly to war material(Norman 1966)(209a)) Finally following World War II most residents returned home except for troops stationed abroad who continued living on campus until 1971 when all barracks moved out.(209a)) When Highway 99 bypassed town center between Moses Lakesite and Everett about 1970 there ensued an increase in vehicle traffic resulting in little or no development other than lessening accessability off 99A especially around main street(208c)), leading eventually into decay over time((208d)) . However even today relatively few vehicles drive past Main Street without entering either side ontoHighway 99B which skirts around downtown Moses Lakesite southwest corner((208e))) . Although initial plans included developing commercial space alongHighway 99B portion just southwest thereof ((208f)))) , development never transpired((210d)) because highway construction projects always take precedence over such endeavors outside Of Town Limits((210e)))) .
