Reverend White later became pastor of nearby Terre Haute before dying in 1857 at the age of 80 years old. In 1850, President Millard Fillmore ordered Congress to appropriate $5,000 for building a school in Northwestern Indiana which would be funded by gifts from area farmers and individuals. A new school building was completed in 1851 but it burned down two years later while being used as a prison washroom due to its construction defects In 1861, when Lincoln was elected president, he ordered all schools closed across America due to Secession War tensions between states over slavery (the North) and states' rights (the South). However, because Monroeville had been open since 1800 as part of Northwest Indiana's educational system, its teachers were able to teach students until classes returned in 1865 when all schools reopened statewide following Lincoln's re-election victory When the American Civil War began on April 12th 1861, monroeville sided with the Confederacy rather than join forces with Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant because they felt that Northern aid would not have been adequate enough to help their compatriots fighting against Confederate General Robert E Lee After three months of skirmishing near Vincennes Junction where most Union troops were quartered during this time period monroeville finally decided against joining any side and surrendered on May 10th 1861 without fight Monroe residents opposed giving up their property so without much choice they turned themselves into prisoners of war along with other northwesternIndiana towns such as Terre Haute which also surrendered . Aftermath: Most residents were released within weeks or days after surrendering while some remained behind until 1863 when they too surrendered unconditionally
