When the first Europeans set foot in what is now Monroe, Washington in 1792, they were met with many obstacles. The area was mostly uninhabited and lacked any natural resources that could be exploited for trade. In 1847, a group of men from Seattle, Washington founded the town of Monroe on what is now the west side of Interstate 5 in central Washington. Population growth continued until World War II when military activity increased population demand for housing and rural products; this caused local farms to go bankrupt and reduce production at local mills which closed down completely during that time period

Grant presidency during that time period (1851-1853). When Polk left office and returned to America September 4th 1850 he designated Monroe as his permanent headquarters once again and lived there until his death on October 15th 1885. In 1861 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation designating Monroe as the capital city due to its central location within easy reach of both New York City andWashington DS C along with its accessibility by railroad which made it an attractive choice for national Headquarters during times when those two cities were struggling financially due to war efforts going on elsewhere in America at that time
